Handler was diagnosed with cancer of the breast in 1989. She ended up dying after fighting cancer for 10 years. Handler's father was Jewish and she was raised in Reform Judaism. Handler was raised in a safe area and had a happy childhood. After turning 19, Handler relocated into Los Angeles to pursue her acting profession. Handler started acting to earn cash. When she turned just 21 years old, Handler decided to pursue standing-up comedy on a regular basis, because she realized her story telling capabilities. Handler's career began as part of the all-female Oxygen TV cast in the hidden camera comedy series Girls Behaving unreasonably. From 2002 to 2005, the show aired. The handler appeared in other show, like Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler started working as a correspondent on The Tonight Show as a reporter. Her breakthrough came in 2006, when she was able to host her own program on E! It was titled The Chelsea Show. The Chelsea Handler Show lasted for 2 seasons. Handler appeared on Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour the following time in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend and HBO have aired the stand-up comedian's shows. In 2010, it was announced that she will be hosting the MTV Video Music Awards 2010. She became the second woman in history hosting the VMA's post Roseanne Barr.
